・飯盛山 白虎隊の墓 19 Tombs of the Byakkotai
白虎隊とは、1860年代に会津軍として戦った16歳から17歳の若者たちのことです。1868年に起きた戊辰戦争では、多くの幼い子どもや女性たちが会津を守るため戦いました。
Byakkotai is the young samurai unit (16-17 years old) of Aizu forces 1860s. Boshin war in 1868, many young kids and ladies join the war to protect Aizu.
・白虎隊自刃の地 The place that Byakkotai boys committed suicide
白虎隊たちは、飯盛山の中腹から城下が燃える様子を見て、もはやこれまでと、その場で自刃する道を選びました。
They decided they could hold on no longer when they see the burning town from the middle of Mt. Imoriyama. Then, they chose to kill themselves there.
・御薬園 Oyakuen(Daimyo Garden)
御薬園は会津の武将たちの療養所でした。名前の意味は薬草園で、会津の人々を疫病などから守るために、たくさんの薬草が育てられていました。現在でも400種類の薬草が育てられています。庭園ではお抹茶を楽しむこともできます。
Oyakuen was a villa of Aizu lords. The name means “herb garden” and many medicinal herbs were grown to help save the Aizu people from a plague. Approximately 400 types of herbs are grown in Oyakuen today. You can enjoy drinking maccha in the garden.
・松平家墓所 Gravesite of the Aizu Clan Leaders (Matsudaira Family)
ここには、江戸時代から会津を収めた松平藩主たちのお墓が並んでいます。大名の墓地としては、日本で最も大きく趣のある墓所です。一番の見どころは、巨大なカメの形の石の上に建てられた石碑です。最近ではパワースポットとしても注目されています。
It contains the tombs of Aizu Matsudaira daimyo lords who ruled Aizu in the Edo period. The site is the largest and most impressive of daimyo burying grounds in all of Japan. The most spectacular sight is a row of gigantic stone slabs standing on enormous turtle-shaped bases. The cemetery has recently become a popular destination as a mystic power spot.
